Bike maintenance checklist: Monthly, seasonal & annual must‑dos

If you want your bike to ride like a dream instead of a drama, a little routine care goes a long way. Think of this as the maintenance guide you’d actually send to a mate, the stuff that keeps your bike fast, safe, and ready for whatever you throw at it.

Monthly: The basics that keep you moving

  • Lube the Chain
A dry chain sounds tragic and rides worse. Clean it, lube it, keep it smooth.
  • Check Your Bolts
Stem, seatpost, cranks, give everything a quick tighten. Loose bolts turn good rides into bad stories.
  • Brake Pads
If they’re thinner than a 5c coin, replace them. Stopping power isn’t optional.
  • Tyre Pressure
Check your PSI. Under‑inflated tyres drag, over‑inflated tyres feel twitchy. Find the sweet spot.
  • Quick Clean
A fast wipe-down keeps grit from chewing through your components. Plus, a clean bike just feels faster.

Seasonal: Every 3 months or when the weather shifts

  • Deep Clean
Degrease the drivetrain, scrub the cassette, clean the chainrings. Your bike will thank you with smoother shifts.
  • Gear & Cable Check
If shifting feels sticky or cables look frayed, sort it now. Smooth gears = smooth riding.
  • Tyre Tread
If your tread is fading, it’s time to upgrade. Bald tyres belong nowhere near Aussie roads or trails.
  • Accessory Audit
Lights bright? Bell working? Bottle cage still holding on? Replace or upgrade as needed.
  • Suspension TLC (MTB)
Clean your stanchions, check seals, and if it’s been a while, book a proper service. Suspension is not a “set and forget” situation.

Annual: The full reset

  • Professional Tune‑Up
This is where the magic happens. Wheel truing, brake bleeds, drivetrain alignment, the works. Worth every dollar.
  • Bearings Check
Headset, bottom bracket, hubs, if they grind, they’re on their way out. Don’t wait for the catastrophic version of this.
  • Replace Cables & Housing
Even if they look fine, they degrade. Fresh cables = crisp braking and shifting.
  • Chain & Cassette Replacement
If you ride regularly, they’re probably worn. New drivetrain parts make your bike feel brand new.
  • Frame Inspection
Look for cracks, stress marks, or paint damage. Catching issues early saves money and skin.

Bonus: Every check is a chance to upgrade

  • Dirty chain? Grab a premium lube.
  • Worn tyres? Go tubeless.
  • Faded grips? Treat your hands.
  • Need a multitool? We’ve got the good ones.
